After breakfast, the journey continues towards the small village of Fasad, located at the edge of the vast desert. Here, you will encounter the iconic frankincense trees (Boswellia sacra), whose precious resin once made Oman one of the most important trading centers of the ancient world. These resilient trees, growing in harsh and arid conditions, tell a story of wealth, heritage, and centuries-old traditions deeply rooted in the land.

The route then leads towards the shores of the Indian Ocean, where the landscape shifts dramatically from desert tones to deep ocean blues. Lunch will be served along the way before visiting the archaeological site of Ubar, often referred to as the legendary “Atlantis of the Desert.” Once a thriving hub of the frankincense trade, Ubar remains shrouded in mystery, with its ruins offering a glimpse into a forgotten civilization. (Please note: access to the site may occasionally be limited due to the absence of a site guardian.)

Continuing the journey, you will discover one of Oman’s most untouched coastal treasures — Fazayah Beach. This remote and pristine beach reveals a surreal landscape where dramatic cliffs sculpted by wind meet soft, untouched الرمال. The coastline here is almost lunar in appearance, yet contrasted by the vibrant emerald waters of the Arabian Sea.

Visit the impressive Mirbat Fort, standing proudly by the shoreline, and discover the town’s heritage as a hub for horse trading. The nearby fishing village offers a glimpse into local life, famous for its production of dried sardines and its timeless maritime traditions.

Continue to the lush valley of Wadi Darbat, one of Dhofar’s most stunning natural highlights. During the monsoon season, the wadi transforms into a green paradise, with seasonal waterfalls cascading through the landscape, fed by rainwater collected in natural pools. Even outside the Khareef season, the area offers dramatic scenery and a serene escape into nature.

Proceed to the ancient port of Samhuram (Khor Rori), a UNESCO-listed archaeological site believed to be connected to the legendary Queen of Sheba. Walk among the ruins of this once-thriving trading city, where frankincense was shipped across the ancient world, and admire the remains of temples, fortifications, and inscriptions that tell the story of Oman’s rich past.

Return to Salalah, the vibrant capital of the Dhofar region and the historical heart of the frankincense trade. With a population of around 350,000, it is the second-largest city in Oman and a gateway between Arabia and the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a visit to the local souq, where the scent of frankincense fills the air and traditional crafts reflect the region’s heritage.
